The Worst Advice We've Ever Received On Double Pushchair

Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

It's easy to move around with the lightweight double pushchair particularly if you have children of different ages. They are generally easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the stairs.

This City Mini GT2 offers side-by-side seats with plenty of legroom, adjustable reclining and massive UPF 50+ canopy with peekaboo windows. It also has an expanding frame width to accommodate the second car seat or a second passenger.

Side-by-Side

Most of the lightweight double pushchairs we tested were side-by-side models. They are ideal for children who can stand up without assistance, since they tend to lack compatibility with car seats. That said, the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both excellent options that offer adjustable recline in both seats, a wide canopy, and padded 5-point harnesses. They're also easy to move despite their larger footprint, and are ideal for parents worried about fitting into doorways.

The Cybex Duet is a little different because its clever frame extends its width to create an additional seat, which makes it lighter than the majority of other pushchairs that are side-by-side available. This means it fits through standard doorways and is easy to maneuver on public transport. It also doubles as a jogger, which is ideal when you are planning to use it with an infant car seat or carrier.

The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another excellent lightweight side-by-side double. It provides additional flexibility due to the modular frame. It's a clever design that lets you turn it into a single stroller or a double by adding 2 carrycots or car seats (it can even accommodate twins). It's a good option for growing families. The UPPAbaby umbrella stroller is one of the lightest, most fashionable and most stylish available.

If you're looking for a more compact, lightweight double, consider the egg2 which folds down to the size of a tiny suitcase. It can be used as a single double with the addition of 2 carrycots or infant car seats, and our home testers were awed by how sleek and simple it was to use, even when fully loaded with children.

Although they're light double pushchairs side-by-side aren't foolproof. If your children are at the same age and stage, they could still argue over who sits in which seat. If they are at different heights, the tandem model could be ideal for them as it lets them face each other.

Tandem

While side-byside models are better suitable for siblings of similar age group, tandem light double strollers have their own appeal. Some can fit a larger car seat and some have seats that can be reversible. Others have an additional carrycot or convertible seat in the middle. They are more spacious and easy to get into and out of. However, their baskets tend to be smaller than those on single buggies. Many feature larger canopies as well as peekaboo windows, and even padding for the leg cushions.

The iCandy Peach tandem is another great example of a lightweight tandem that is a an excellent value. Its fabrics feel a little less expensive than our other top-rated doubles however, it still looks and feels great and is user-friendly. One of the most striking things about it is the one-handed fold. While it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab has said it's "genius". The carrycot is not foldable when it is attached. However, the process to attach and remove the carrycot is simple and quick.

Tandem pushchairs that are lightweight typically make tighter turns than side-by-side models, however, they can be more challenging to drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. They are also slightly slower to accelerate and may be heavier to move, which can cause stress on your back.

A convertible double buggy is an additional option. It's initially an individual, but you can add adapters to convert it into double. This can include a second seat or carrycot in the front or children can be seated side-by-side. Some also have the option of incorporating buggy boards, which could help older children keep up with a younger sibling.

The Uppababy Vista V2 is a great example of a convertible as it can also convert into a twin pram through the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) that provide a flat space for infants. They can be positioned side by side or attached to face each other and you can use them with the infant car seat that comes with the pushchair (as long as you choose a compatible one). As they're made with quality materials, these kinds of buggies that are dual-use can be used for years without showing much wear, which means they have a the highest price resales.

Single-to-Double

This light double buggy is designed for families who love the outdoors and would like to upgrade from a single-stroller. It can be transformed into a jogger with the kit that comes with air-filled tires and all-wheel-suspension. It's also a great choice for twins, or children of different ages and as triple tandem, it can handle rough terrain. It's a great option for parents who want a chic design that is as elegant as a single. It comes in various colors of fabric.

We loved the way that this iCandy model folds down with a one-handed mechanism that's extremely easy to master. It's heavier than other single-to-double pushchairs, but home tester Karolina says it's still very capable of maneuvering even with two toddlers inside and carrying a carrycot.

You can purchase additional items like the Roma Gemini Carrycots (PS100) which are great for babies. Our panel of testers found that the seats to be comfortable for toddlers, with good headrests and lumbar support. There are many options for reclining and recline, with the front seat adjusting to various positions, and the rear seat offering the option of recline.

The main drawback to this kind of buggy is that it is generally larger overall than the side-by-side doubles which makes it more difficult to get through doorways and can be difficult to maneuver up and down kerbs. However the suspension and wheels are generally able to do a good job of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're usually lighter than the side-by-sides means you can still have plenty of storage space. These strollers aren't easy to maneuver through supermarkets with narrow aisles and they can be difficult to carry loads. Although it's much easier to turn the stroller around on a narrow, curving path, this can still be a hassle. Some are more easy to turn than others, such as the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.

Convertible

The great thing about convertible double pushchairs is the ability to adapt to changing family requirements. They are typically single buggies and come with adapters to add an additional seat, carrycot or (in some cases) an automobile seat to the frame.  double buggy with carrycot  can even convert back to a single when your older child begins to walk more or prefers to ride on buggy boards.

This stylish tri-fold double stroller is one of the lightest on our list. It can support up to 40lbs per child and has a storage basket between the seats. The spacious canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining seats as well as front and back suspensions for smoother riding on rough terrain were appreciated by home testers. It also comes with a convenient parent cup holder, and an ample accessible, easily accessible basket. However, they noticed that the backs of the seats have tiny pockets that are not big enough to hold much more than a phone and keys.

It features a high-profile steering handlebar, front and rear suspensions to smooth out rough terrain, it folds compactly and stands up on its own with straps for easy transport, and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks as well as 10-inch back wheels that have suspensions to ensure more comfortable riding. This versatile tandem is the top choice of our home testers due to the fact that it is easy to maneuver and comes with an enormous shopping basket that is accessible from both seats when they are in the parent-facing position. Its extremely light weight (about the same as single pushchairs) makes it easy to maneuver. Reversible seats mean you can switch them around to face either way, and the clever way that it connects an additional seat or riding board to the rear is appreciated by many. Parents also appreciated that it accommodates car seats and infant carriers from various brands. This includes those that aren't typically compatible with other double buggies.
